Engineering documents and design reports for India

Draft a structural design report, stability certificate, specification or design brief from an India template that names the IS codes and leaves the NBC edition as a placeholder for you to confirm (NBC 2016 or SP 7:2026), as an unsigned draft that a registered engineer reviews, completes and signs.

The problem

Much of a structural engineer's week in India goes into design reports, specifications, design briefs and stability certificates. The layout barely changes between jobs; the details and code references have to be right.

A general-purpose AI writer will invent an engineer's name, a registration number or a clause. On a document that may be signed, that is worse than a blank page.

How it works

  1. Choose the document type: Structural Design Report, Structural Design / Stability Certificate, Structural Specification or Design Brief.
  2. Choose the state or union territory. For Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat the drafting guidance names local building rules; elsewhere it names the local bye-laws. No template chooses the NBC edition: each leaves an NBC EDITION placeholder (NBC 2016 or SP 7:2026) for you to confirm.
  3. Enter the values. The form lists every value the template carries: for a design report, the project name, address, client, structure type, soil class, seismic zone, wind region (as the basic wind speed), importance level, design life, occupancy group (building class), imposed, wind and earthquake actions, key members and their grades, connections, the engineer's name, qualifications and registration, report reference, date, additional standards, and the foundation, floor, wall and roof descriptions and special considerations.
  4. Select Draft document. The tool fills your values into its India template. For a design report or design brief it also retrieves Indian entries, and the AI drafts the remaining sections, including any description you left blank. A certificate or specification is assembled from the template and your values alone: no AI writes any part of it.
  5. Anything you did not supply stays a bracketed placeholder, such as [ENGINEER NAME] or [SEISMIC ZONE — NOT PROVIDED]. Those slots are closed before the model sees them, and the response names any it wrote over anyway.
  6. Each reference is checked against the knowledge base: a caution banner lists those matching no standard any region we cover publishes, and another country's real standard is reported as that.
  7. The system, not the AI, adds a fixed notice to every document saying it is AI-assisted and needs review by a registered engineer.
  8. The draft is saved to your Documents list with the status draft, and you can download it as DOCX, PDF or Markdown. The PDF writes ₹ as "Rs.", and refuses for Devanagari or Tamil text rather than printing question marks — use DOCX or Markdown for those.

Worked example

Illustrative inputs, not a real project:

  • document type: Structural Design Report
  • state: Karnataka
  • project name: Example Residence
  • structure type: two-storey reinforced concrete framed house
  • soil class, seismic zone, wind region, importance level and design life: from the site investigation and the engineer's own assessment

The draft follows the template's headings, with your inputs where you entered them. Any value you leave blank, such as the occupancy group, the imposed, wind and earthquake actions, or the key members and connections, appears as a bracketed NOT PROVIDED placeholder for you to complete. The AI is told not to fill them, but it can still write a value, such as a response reduction factor, terrain category or section size, into the prose, and that is not always caught. Descriptions you leave blank are drafted as prose: the AI's writing, not a design result. The conclusion is a placeholder, and the AI is told never to call the design adequate. We haven't quoted the draft, because it is generated fresh each time.

What you would do next: fill in every placeholder from your own design results, rewrite the drafted descriptions, write the conclusion yourself, and keep the template's statements about the codes only if your design bears them out. Then sign it as the responsible engineer, or don't issue it.

What it doesn't do

  • It does not produce a signed or finished document. Every output is an unsigned draft with no professional standing until a registered engineer has reviewed, corrected and signed it.
  • It does not fill in your credentials. Placeholders such as [ENGINEER NAME] stay until you replace them. Never issue a document with a placeholder left in.
  • It does not design anything. It calculates no loads, sizes no members and checks no design; wrong input gives confident, wrong output.
  • Its references can still be wrong. Retrieval is limited to Indian entries, and a clause number is ticked only when we find it in one. A tick is not a reading of the clause. Check every citation against the current published edition.
  • Its certificate declares nothing. Design values you leave blank appear as placeholders, and so does the statement of compliance: that declaration is yours to write and adopt, because a tool cannot make one on your behalf.

Standards StructBy AI holds summaries of for India

Our own plain-English summaries, covering a fraction of each standard; they are not the text of the standards, and not every tool uses every one. Our NBC summaries are based on NBC 2016, which BIS withdrew on 30 April 2026 when it established SP 7:2026, National Building Construction Standards 2026.

  • NBC 2016
  • IS 456 — Concrete
  • IS 800 — Steel
  • IS 875 — Loads
  • IS 1893 — Seismic
  • IS 1904 — Foundations
  • IS 13920 — Ductile detailing

Questions engineers ask

Does it produce a signed or finished certificate?

No. Every document is an unsigned draft with no professional standing, with placeholders such as [ENGINEER NAME], [REGISTRATION NUMBER] and [DATE]. The certificate form asks for the design values: seismic zone, basic wind speed, importance factor, design life and occupancy or building group. Any you leave blank appears as a bracketed NOT PROVIDED placeholder, such as [SEISMIC ZONE — NOT PROVIDED], for the engineer to complete. No AI writes any part of the certificate: it is the template with the values you entered, so read every value before you sign. In a design report or design brief, which the AI drafts, a value it writes into the prose is not always caught. The NBC edition and the signing engineer's own declaration are placeholders too: the engineer writes and adopts the declaration, and only if it is true.

Which document types can I generate for India?

A structural design report, a structural design / stability certificate, a structural specification and a client-facing design brief, each from an India template that names the IS codes and leaves the NBC edition as a placeholder, [NBC EDITION — confirm the edition adopted by the local authority (NBC 2016 or SP 7:2026)], for you to complete. A design report or design brief is drafted by AI around your values; a certificate or specification is assembled from the template and your values, with no AI. There are no state-specific certificate forms: every state and union territory gets the same generic certificate.

Will it make up engineer names or registration numbers?

It is instructed not to. Any identifier you did not enter, such as a name, registration number, certificate number, insurance policy number or date, is left as a bracketed capitalised placeholder. Check the draft for any placeholder left in before it is issued.

Does the design report say the design is adequate?

No. The conclusion is left as a placeholder for the engineer to write from their own checks, and the AI is told never to call the design adequate or safe. The foundation, floor, wall and roof descriptions are drafted by the AI when you leave them blank: they are its writing, not your design, and must be replaced with your own. The loads, key members and connections are form fields, and any you leave blank stays a placeholder.

Are the IS and NBC references accurate?

Not always. Retrieval is limited to Indian entries, and each reference in the draft is checked against our summaries. A caution banner lists references matching no standard any region we cover publishes, and another country's real standard is reported as that, not as invented. A clause number ticked as found only appears in our summary; it is not a reading of the clause. Verify every citation against the published code.

What happens to the document after it is generated?

It is saved to your Documents list with the status draft, along with a record of the inputs and, where an AI wrote part of it, the model and the reference excerpts it was given. You can move it through review to final, and download it as DOCX, PDF or Markdown to make corrections in your own editor.

StructBy AI outputs are automated or AI-assisted and must be reviewed by a qualified engineer before anyone relies on them. They are not professional engineering, legal or regulatory advice, and they do not replace a site-specific hazard assessment, a geotechnical investigation or a registered engineer. References to NBC 2016 and the IS codes are summaries and pointers, not the text of those documents, so verify every value and clause against the current NBC and BIS publications before you use it in design or documentation.
